-by Lydia Bailey, Coordinator of Volunteers, 2100 Lakeside Men’s Shelter “I know there are so many people that need help in our world, but Clevelanders are our neighbors. I don’t know what brought people to being homeless, but they are people in need.” Joan Groening of Advent Lutheran Church, Solon, gives this as her motive for setting out on the circuitous path that led to establishing a furniture ministry. “In 2006 Advent had guests from the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry Lakeside Men’s Shelter. We then made the decision to support the shelter by serving meals four times a year, and collecting clothing, towels, sheets and blankets.” “Then”…Joan begins her visionary tone of voice, “Knowing the need for good used furniture, and armed with my son-in-law’s old truck and a few good people, we started to collect furniture from Advent parishioners, friends and neighbors. This seemed like a no brainer where I could live my faith while ministering to others. We collected items from Parma, Mantua, Seven Hills, Solon, Twinsburg, Elyria, and University Heights. |
