Thanks to community partners invested in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood of Cleveland, children will soon have a much-needed new play space. This includes young children from 20 housing units owned by LMM, reserved for families who are exiting homelessness.
It’s in an area without much green space for play. After much planning by all partners involved, and donations totaling more than $20,000, the playground is being assembled this week, with a dedication ceremony and opening celebration set for Saturday, July 13 at 1pm at the corner of E. 60th & Prosser (1235-1237 E. E. 60th).
The green space and future play site is owned and managed by Emmanuel Promise of Hope, a sober living ministry, who acquired the space from the Cuyahoga Land Bank in 2020 with the vision of offering a safe play space for neighborhood children and the understanding that greenspaces are vital to the overall health of inner city neighborhoods. EPOH has already made investments, including a new pavilion, since acquiring the property.
The playscape design and construction is being managed by Ingenuity Cleveland, a nonprofit creative agency already partnering on a number of placemaking efforts and greenspace activations in the neighborhood, in which it is also headquartered. Ingenuity engaged Cleveland Fabrication, a member of their IngenuityLabs Incubator, for the playscape construction, along with neighborhood residents, volunteers and supporters. Among these are volunteers from Enbridge Gas Ohio, longstanding supporters of their work in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood.
Major support for the project was provided by TriState Capital Bank. Additional support was given by Holly & Dave Little and Liberty Tire/IMC Outdoor Living. Input from the community has been an important part of the process. A survey was conducted to select a theme, name and colors for the “Sea Monster St. Clair” who inhabits the playscape, and all are welcome to a dedication celebration, unveiling and “naming ceremony” on July 13th from 1-4pm.
The dedication celebration will include remarks by local stakeholders, a cook-out with refreshments provided by LMM’s Metro45 Food Truck, face painting, balloon twisting, games, and the opportunity to pitch in to finalize the installation.
