Medicaid is a critical program for vulnerable populations, not just in Cleveland or Ohio, but across the entire country. Recently, however, Medicaid proposals are being considered that, if implemented, would be devastating to the populations that LMM serves. This includes direct cuts, caps, and block grants.
Nationally, Medicaid provides health insurance to almost 80 million people, including:
- 7.2 million older adults, among them 756,000 nursing home residents.
- 36.8 million children.
- 14 million rural residents.
- 8.4 million adults with disabilities.
In Cuyahoga County, roughly one-third of county residents are on Medicaid, with over 100,000 losing coverage if Medicaid expansion is eliminated.
More than 95% of people who access LMM’s services are living in poverty. Our data shows that 2,605 people whom we served last year are enrolled in Medicaid, including individuals residing at the Men’s Shelter on Lakeside Ave., families experiencing homelessness, students in our culinary training program, youth and young adults in shelter care and transitional living, and those in our Guardianship program.
Given this threat to critical funding supporting the individuals we serve, LMM is asking you to take a few moments to call your elected officials at the state and federal levels and tell them about the importance of protecting Medicaid and the social services safety net!
It only takes five minutes, but it will make a huge difference. Thank you for standing with us.
