For years, Garfield Memorial Church (GMC) has faithfully supported the Men’s Shelter on Lakeside Ave., living out their mission to “Widen the Circle.” From preparing and serving hearty meals to offering kind words and encouragement, GMC’s volunteers have become a steady, compassionate presence for men experiencing homelessness. With participants ranging from middle schoolers to lifelong members, GMC embodies what it means to serve across generations, and across communities.
What about LMM interests the church? Is it a specific program, area of service, or population, and why?
GMC has been supporting the Men’s Shelter on Lakeside Ave. for many years by providing a hearty, tasty, and nutritious dinner once a month. Our volunteers enjoy preparing the dinners, serving the meals, and interacting with and encouraging residents.
What aspects of the church’s mission, vision, or ministry align with our work at LMM?
One of GMC’s core missions is to “Widen the Circle” – to branch out from our home base in Pepper Pike to serve those in need in Northeast Ohio and beyond. Providing food and encouragement to the residents of the shelter helps us fulfill that goal.
In what ways does your ministry support people in the community experiencing difficulties or in crisis?
GMC’s meal ministry supports people in the community experiencing difficulties by providing: (i) a well-balanced, hot meal; (ii) smiles and (i) kind words and prayers for those experiencing difficulties or in crisis.
How are your members and leadership supporting the next generation/young people of faith to walk in service to others?
GMC’s meal ministry volunteers range in age from middle school to mature members and friends of the church (and nearly every age range in between).
