As one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most enduring quotes, this question lies at the core of LMM’s work, and is consistent with our faith tradition that calls us to love and care for our neighbor. We seek to answer that call every day—standing with people who are unhoused, unemployed, victims of abuse or neglect, and those yearning for a second chance. Through our services and civic engagement activities, we offer responsive solutions, voice, and hope.
On this National Day of Service, we pause to celebrate the 150 staff partners and 1,800 volunteers engaged in LMM’s efforts each year, whose acts of service contribute to our caring community, and more broadly to Dr. King’s ideal of the “Beloved Community”. They meet people where they are and provide support during vulnerable moments. With dignity and respect, they assist people in crisis by helping them to navigate systems, overcome barriers, and develop a plan for stability and transformation.
In addition to our staff and volunteers, our caring community includes the many people who support LMM efforts by being civically engaged. This includes individuals who have the courage to share personal stories of lived experience, and others who walk alongside them to identify gaps and influence public policy, especially in areas related to our work: housing, the criminal legal system, and the health and human services safety net. Their work reflects Dr. King’s belief that compassion combined with action can transform lives.
Finally, our mission could not be fulfilled without the support of the donors, funders and service partners, who sustain our efforts to love and care for our neighbors. We are grateful for their steadfast commitment.
