More than 900 people volunteered with LMM last year. If you are thinking about joining them, consider your interests and skills and review the volunteer needs listed below. If you see a program opportunity that interests you, contact the person listed. The volunteer process varies from program to program, however an application, screening and training are generally required.

Serve with People Involved with the Justice System

Community Re-Entry’s Friend-to-Friend Program is also looking for volunteers in the following roles: A Volunteer Recruiter to visit groups and churches to speak to them about Friend-to-Friend in hopes of finding volunteer prison visitors; A Job Developer to research and/or visit companies to find potential employers who will give formerly incarcerated the opportunity for employment; A Job Coach to help newly employed, formerly incarcerated persons obtain skills they need to be successful in their jobs. Women’s Re-Entry Network is looking for volunteers to collect personal hygiene supplies for women (soap, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, etc.) on behalf of congregations, civic groups, etc.. Contact Gloria Pickett at 216.696.7535 x 200 or

Women's Re-Entry Network is in need of group facilitators at the Northeast Pre-Release Center for a Peer Support Group (5-6:30 p.m. on Mondays) and also for a Grief/Loss Group (9-10:50 am on Tuesdays). Serve with People with Long-Term Care Needs

Adult Guardianship Services invites compassionate, caring adults to advocate for someone who has no voice. AGS needs volunteers to serve as legal guardians for indigent, incompetent adults to make medical and residency decisions for them, in Cuyahoga County. Adult Guardianship Services is looking for a marketing/public relations volunteer. Hours are flexible and the volunteer can work from home. Must be self-motivated, able to type and feel comfortable working on the internet. Activities would include helping to plan and promote events, solicit sponsors, arrange vendors and writing press releases and stories for AGS newsletter. Serve with Persons with Disabilities

LEAP (Linking Employment, Abilities & Potential). LEAP programs have volunteer needs in several areas: data entry and clerical, categorizing and filing of archival materials; web search; follow-up phone calls and assistance with their annual holiday party. LEAP's Center for Personal Assistance is looking for a clerical volunteer once a week from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m.

LEAP is in need of volunteers to assist participants in the July, Auguest and September Quantum LEAP Recreational Program. LEAP is searching for volunteers to advocate for people with disabilities. Volunteers will be part of an advocacy network that receives email advocacy alerts that request action on pending legislation or rule changes affecting people with disabilities. LEAP needs volunteer classroom instructors to teach job readiness skills to participants in Ohio Works First classes held Monday through Friday at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministy.


Serve with People Who are Homeless 

Teach

  • Tutor for G.E.D. Test/ Reading: Assist studying, reading, or G.E.D. preparation.
  • Computer Lab: Assist the men with basic computer skills, on-line job search and resumer writing. Hours are flexible. 
  • Job Readiness; Help residents prepare for housing in a program covering such topics as rights/responsibilities of tenant, budgeting/credit counseling.

Companion

  • Re-Entry: Accompany those transitioning into life after prison.
  • Recovery: Accompany someone through the stages of recovery.
  • Education: Assist in school application process for one who is returning to school.
  • Employment: Accompany someone through the process of job search, interviews, and follow-up after interviews.

Spiritual

  • Scripture Study: Reading and reflecting on Scripture with a group that welcomes all faith traditions.
  • Listening: Be a pastoral presence with a team of volunteer listeners.
  • Retreat: Participate in the shelter’s retreat process.

More Ideas!

  • Kitchen: Due to cuts in 2100's food budget, the shelter is in need of volunteers to provide all or part of a meal. 
  • Community Garden: Help maintain the shelter’s vegetable/flower garden.
  • Art: Share individual and group expression through the visual arts.
  • Writing: Take part in a writers’ group focusing on journaling and autobiography.
  • Book Club: Take part in a discussion group that uses current fiction and non-fiction books to explore ideas.
  • Environmental: Lend your expertise to making the shelter more energy efficient.
  • Micro-Enterprise: Lend your business experience in planning for entrepreneurial/job creation opportunities.
  • Music: Teach a few chords on the guitar, or provide keyboard skills for our shelter’s Gospel Group.
  • Sewing Circle: Teach a person to mend their own clothes while creating a circle of conversation.

Serve with Youth

Covenant Project is a LMM collaboration with Maple Heights church working with students, K-12. Tutors are needed on Tuesday & Thursday, 6- 7:30 p.m., at Lutheran Church of the Covenant on Libby Rd. Youth Re-Entry Program assists youth ages 16-21 in the transition to independent living through semi-independent apartment living and a wide variety of self-sufficiency skills. Apartments need painting and maintenance; coordinator needed to organize apartment upkeep. YRP also needs volunteer tutors and life skills educators. Call Kandi Withers at 216.221.8920.

Westhaven Youth Shelter needs someone skilled in general home maintenance and upkeep; maintenance services on a regular basis would be of great benefit. Specific lunch food items are also appreciated. Contact Director Mark Hamm, 216.941.0062 or

After School Prevention Resources needs recreation, life skills group and fitness instruction volunteers.
