During August and September, at the shelter’s vegetable/flower garden at 23rd and St. Clair, the average harvest of tomatoes was 600 pounds. They were put to good use in the 1,000 meals served daily at 2100 Lakeside.

The flowers in the garden-cosmos, cleome, clematis, lilies, and trumpet vine-were a source of on-going comments.

“People in the neighborhood who I didn’t even know would wave, give a thumbs up, or ask me how I make the garden look so good. The people getting in their cars at the end of the day would wave goodbye," said Hector Castro, a resident of the shelter who worked throughout the summer at the garden.

Through the service of volunteers, 2100 is once again transforming blacktop into a place of sanctuary and refuge. The East courtyard, formerly the East Dock, will have four garden beds filled with flowers and arborvitae and several rain barrels and benches.

Dana Owens of FloydBrowne designed the beds. Two were built in June by volunteers from Friend’s Quaker Church in Willoughby Hills, a youth group from Disciples of Christ Church, Cleveland Heights, and a youth group from Indianapolis. The beds were built with railroad ties donated by the RTA and filled with high quality topsoil donated by the OSU Summer Sprout Program.

The other two beds were built by Dan Cisco, the leading construction person from Friend’s Quaker Church, working side-by side with the residents and other volunteers.
