Advocates Take Unique Approach to Raise National Awareness
Of Challenges Still Faced by Persons with Disabilities
Nationwide Bus Tour Urges Full Realization of the Promise of the ADA

(Cleveland, OH) – The landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law more than 17 years ago to ensure that the civil rights of persons with disabilities would be protected and that the same opportunities to which all Americans are entitled would be available, regardless of disability. While the ADA was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and created change throughout the U.S., many of its promises have not been kept. It is believed by many in the disability community that recent Federal Court rulings have eroded many of the employment protections that Congress had intended when it passed the law, and too many public services are still inaccessible to persons with disabilities.

The Road to Freedom is a year-long, national bus tour and photographic exhibit of the grassroots “people’s movement” leading to the passage of the ADA. A project of ADA Watch and the National Coalition for Disability Rights, the bus is traveling throughout the U.S. to tell the story of the struggle for disability rights and of the need for expanded educational and economic opportunities for children and adults with physical, mental, cognitive, sensory and developmental disabilities.
