One Accord is a group of four who gather to sing Gospel. Kenny Alexander, Bobby Johnson, Leon Ferguson, and Emmitt Prayer met at the Men’s Shelter of 2100 Lakeside, and began singing together a little over a year ago. “We started singing because we love it…Even passing in the hall we’d start up and sing.” At the heart of One Accord’s music is shared faith, grown out of hard times. As Kenny explains, “’God Is Able’ is our signature song, and that’s the message we sing to all people. Through all the trials that life throws at you, God-is-able.”

Leon was born in Belle Glade, Florida, and moved to Cleveland at the age of six. He was influenced most by his mother and grandmother. “They always tried to teach me the right way to go, and to always give respect to others. God has always smiled on me through all my disappointments. Through the whole process I learned God is real. I feel His presence, like the song I love, ‘Jesus Is Here In This Very Room.’”

Bobby was born in Cleveland, and has always loved to sing, “I picked it up on the streets, singing on street corners, and got a lot of support for this, especially from my father.” “I had a good home, not a broken home; a lot of nurturing, and this carried over. My mom stood in the gaps for us, prayed for us, helped through tough times.” Bobby speaks of his stay at 2100: “I can help other people here. I’m finding my ministry in singing Gospel. Love is the strongest force.”

Emmitt was born and raised in Cleveland, and inspired most by his sister. “She’s a musician, and the one who got me into singing and playing the piano through church. She never let what people say hurt her. People would try to discourage, but she’d say, ‘You continue, no matter.’ Now that’s the way I do it. God was there for me then, and here for me now…I still have joy.”

Kenny was born in Detroit and guided by his father and sister. “Father was a piano player and preacher. He’d always make us go to church and sing, nine brothers and sisters, with six of us in a group called ‘The Kingdom Triumphs.’ The lead singer was my sister Sennie. She had a beautiful voice, and inspired me to sing more Gospel. Father would always have a sermon ready…even now I love to hear preaching. Jesus didn’t go through easy times…but as long as we keep the faith and trust, God is able.”
